About the event
The Origins of Special Effects
Make the impossible happen on screen! In this hands-on workshop for high school students, we’ll explore clips from the imaginative films of Georges Méliès, a pioneer of cinema and special effects, and uncover the camera tricks behind his movie magic. Then, you’ll put those techniques to work by creating your own short film sequence.
The workshop will begin with a look at Méliès’ groundbreaking approach to special effects, exploring the creative techniques and camera tricks he used to bring fantastical ideas to life on screen.
Then, it’s your turn! Working in small groups, participants will create a one-minute film scene featuring three different special effects ideas, putting what they’ve learned into practice and producing something of their own by the end of the workshop.
Free for high school students with RSVP.
