Gabriel Mayo


Gabriel Mayo is a Peruvian-American filmmaker who grew up in Lima and Miami. He studied music at Berklee College of Music, and Film & Creative Writing at the University of Miami. He has worked in Miami and LA doing freelance work as an editor and writer, and is currently in post-production for his first feature film: A Weird Kind of Beautiful. As a writer he worked for directors Ricardo de Montreuil and Alejandro Heiber on various projects. His script for “Eon” placed Top 3 in the Final Draft Screenplay Competition. His short films have played in various festivals and his video work for The Players’ Tribune has appeared on national TV on FOX Sports.

Our FilmGate Festival this September is Music Video Month, showcasing the diverse music community in Miami! 

Our Music Video Month will be more than a film festival, it will be a celebration of music! We will have an open bar, high tables, and a space to get up and enjoy the music with a crowd! We will have two LIVE PERFORMANCES of the artists chosen for the festival, voted by the FilmGate community!

The Mighty Screenwriting Bootcamp

September 30 - October 21, 2023
Saturdays only, 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM

This 4 week course is for the writer who has an idea, maybe some pages written, and a very rough draft. The instructor will go over 3 act structure and will help participants craft a plan to complete and refine the draft. Come ready to take notes, workshop scenes, receive feedback and walk out with a plan to finish your screenplay.

This class will be led by Julia Camara who taught Screenwriting at UCLA Extension Writers’ Program and at Sundance Co//ab.
